Meet Katelyn Thornley, a seventh grade student who spends most of her days in sneezing. 12-year-old from Angleton, Texas, is suffering from an unknown condition which makes her sneezing more than 12,000 times a day, preventing it enjoys a normal childhood...
The mysterious illness began three weeks ago, just after she had a class of clarinet.
“First I started a little sneeze, I thought I was allergic to something or that I do not wash the mouthpiece well,” said Katelyn.
Soon the little sneeze grew into something much worse, 20 sneezes in a minute all day long, which makes it difficult for her life and the ability to do anything.
“I constantly have a stomach ache from the effort, my legs were weak and could hardly eat,” she said.
The situation has become so bad that Katelyn now stopped going to school and playing the clarinet. Her parents and doctors try to help her in every way. So far they have consulted with 6 doctors, but none of them was able to provide an explanation or remedy. They rejected allergies and viruses, and some doctors believe it will be many reactions triggered by stress, while others think it could be a nervous tick.
However, none of the prescribed medication helped her. Listening to “The Beatles” helps her to relax a bit, and the only time she stop sneezing is the time when she is falling asleep after taking Benadryl. Otherwise, she sneezes all the time.
“It’s hard to watch her,” said Katelyn’s’ father.
“We would like to find a solution,” says her mother says, and adds:
“This is so rare and so difficult.”
Katelyn is trying to stay positive and keep her sense of humor, but it is not easy.
“Sometimes I wish I could leave my body for a while and look at myself sleep and wake up in peace, because even when I dream I sneeze in my dreams” she said.
“I do not care what they have to do to me; I just want it to stop.”
